LES ENFANTS DU CAMEROON (Cameroon's Children)
Stadiums in Bafoussam, Douala, Garoua, Limbe and Yaounde, Cameroon | June 2019
LARGE-SCALE SHOW | COCAN x CREATIVE SPIRIT
Cameroon's Children tell us stories. They draw, today, the Africa of tomorrow. Gathered at the foot of a huge Pictures Tree, their sketches come to life thanks to the light of the Nation's Torch. They give the world a Cameroonian message in the form of a real virtual tale.
When the organizing committee of the African Cup of Nations came with the idea to produce a show right before every opening match of the five stadiums that held the cup, we immediately came with the idea to perform the same show five times at the same time. It was a way to mark the unity of the country and the gathering of the sixteen participating nations.
As usual, the aim was to write a show that keeps a national cultural identity while and meets the international standards. Africa is a land of both traditions and innovations, thus we imagined a show with both traditional live acts and cutting-edge multimedia acts. People gathered at the foot of a "palaver tree" to tell story in a traditional way, but the palaver tree was a robotic and multimedia installation and the storytelling was augmented reality. The message was clear: know where you come from to know where you go.
Children were the main characters, we wanted us to be in the heart of the show because they are in the heart of the country's story. They drew stories that came to life. The symbol might be obvious, but efficient, the future belongs to the next generation. Thus, let's listen to their stories today in order to give them the tools to write them tomorrow.
Unfortunately, the African Cup of Nations in Cameroon was cancelled due to national issues. So, was the show but the project remains and the story too.
